Georges Island, in the middle of Halifax Harbour, served as a military complex and prison camp till WWII.Beginning in 1755, Acadians who resisted the British deportation were prisoned here, where the conditions were horrendous.
The "Grand Derangement" (Great Upheaval) resulted in the forced deportation of French-speaking Acadians by the British. Most Acadians were driven from their lands and homes and settled in other colonies in North America. The mass displacement and intention destruction of French culture and language has forever since changed the identity of Acadians in Canada, and in Nova Scotia few today are able to speak French.
